Rusty Kanokogi died on November 21, 2009, from complications of multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells. In August 2009, she finally received the gold medal she won 50 years earlier at the Y.M.C.A. championships. The medal had been taken away from her because in order to compete she had disguised herself as a man.
